Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Care: A Source Book (2003) is a book for the staff of all inpatient psychiatric units. It was conceived as a Best Practice Protocol but it rapidly became obvious that there was no widely available body of evidence nor guides to practice and what most units required was access to discussion documents about the role of such units.
Management of Mental Disorders (4th Edition, 2004) typifies the radical changes that have occurred in the treatment of people with mental disorders. Few people are now treated in hospital, most are treated by general practitioners, and the remainder are treated by specialist mental health staff in the community. These two volumes encapsulate the best of current practice. While outlining the steps required for proper diagnosis they concentrate, as few other books do, on management - good clinical care, effective treatment protocols, outcome measures and information for patients and families.
The Treatment of Anxiety Disorders (2nd Edition, 2003) by Andrews, Creamer, Crino, Hunt, Lampe and Page provides clinicians with an review of the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation and treatment of the anxiety disorders. It provides Clinican Guides and Patient Treatment Manuals for conducting a cognitive behavioural program for people with panic/agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and generalised anxiety disorder. Published by Cambridge University Press, it is a standard text in the field. The Recognition and Management of Anxiety Disorders ( 1997) is a pair of training videotapes. In the first, actors portray typical presentations of people with the common anxiety disorders. An expert introduction preceedes each vignette. In the second videotape the commonly used cognitive behavioural techniques are illustrated; hyperventilation in the patient with panic disorders/agoraphobia, cognitive restructuring in the person with social phobia, graded exposure and response prevention in the person with obsessive compulsive disorder, structured problem solving in generalised anxiety disorder, and a combination of all techniques in the person with post traumatic stress disorder. The videos are made in short, five minute segments, to allow them to be integrated into lectures or staff training sessions. Counselling and Management Skills in Clinical Practice CD-ROM. (1998) This interactive compact disc should enable clinicians to learn or refresh their knowledge of five basic clinical skills - how to interview, how to educate patients about their illness, what to say when prescribing, the use of structured problem solving and teaching hyperventilation control. The skills are demonstrated in five simulated GP-patient interviews. The Treatment Outlines for Australian Psychiatry (1994) were the first attempt to provide empirical and consensus based guidelines for the common psychiatric disorders. Ten disorders were covered by an empirical literature review, a survey of current psychiatric practice, and by the consensus view of nominated experts. All were published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry between 1983 and 1992, and are supported by a number of derived papers on the meta-analyses of treatment outcome studies, on surveys of current practice and by analyses of current workforce patterns.
