NATIONAL SURVEY OF
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Principal Investigator: Andrews
Funding: Department of Health and Ageing
Brief Summary of Research Plan, Techniques And Methodologies:
The WHO Collaborating Center at CRUfAD received the contract to develop
a computerised interview for a national mental health survey that wouuld
show how many Australian adults had which mental disorders, how disabled
they were by them and what services did they need and use. We redesigned
the CIDI to provide a twelve month version and in 1997 the Australian
bureau of Statistics carried out the household survey. They interviewed
10,641 respondents, 78% of those approached. Analysis is nearly complete
and we have published some 30 papers on the results (see publications).
The overview paper (Andrews, Henderson and Hall, British Journal of Psychiatry
2001) should be consulted. Three other papers are noteworthy. Andrews,
Issakisis and Carter (BJP 2001) examined the shortfall in service delivery,
Andrews Slade and Issakidis examined the problem of comorbidity (BJP 2002)
and Sanderson and Andrews reported the disability associated with mental
disorders (Psychiatric Services 2002). The remainder of the 30 papers
are concerned with the individual disorders or other more specialised
topics. The survey data have informed other research and there are more
than 100 publications overall. The data are currently being used in two
costing studies
